HOUSE OF SHADOWS

This is a student based collaborative devising performance inspired by Sophie Herxheimer poetry book called Velkom to Inklandt.

These poems are interpreted as dramatic monologues in the voice of her German Jewish grandmother who came over to England. These poems are filled with memories, imagination and pictures of black and white linocut outs of objects which tells a story.

We felt these images could represent our own story on what is home and as we are from different backgrounds what are the things we miss about home and we can share in our group new experiences of diversity in culture and to back London feel like our new home.

There were two parts added to this piece which was food market stalls one from India and the other from China which was filled with colour, character and the smell of all the spices. As we wanted to brig our culture into the audiences world and give them a new experience. The second part was an interactive gallery space where the audience would come in 5 at a time and use their phone torches to create shadows from the two performing body. These performing bodies would perform a series of movements with a cut out object and repeat these to show the essence of memory and everyday life.
